Alpe d'Huez

[Home] [Alpe d'Huez] [Avoriaz] [Folgarida] [Niederau] [Sansicario] [Val d'Isere] [Val Thorens]

Tour Operator : First Choice, Chalet : Robert

Another resort that might rank right up there with Avoriaz & Val Thorens. Once again the ski area is vast with a lot of variation. The main reason that I can't really say is that we had four days of blizzard with lots of closures.

More beginners again - this time my son and my father ! (your never too old to start).

The centre of the ski area is too flat and careful planning should be used to prevent unnecessary walking. This would appear to be a busy resort with a lot of tows in the centre.

There is an exhibition at the top of the main cable car of ice carvings that is well worth a visit.

Our was a ski in/nearly ski out chalet. If you stay here then do not use the bucket lifts if you can ski well. Behind the chalet there is a trail to a lift further down the hill which takes you to the top. Alternatively use the tow opposite the bucket and then cut across the slope. It's not much better but usually it is much quicker.

The town itself is quite good with a few restaurants and shops but we were in a catered chalet. The standard of catering provided was superb and did a great deal to restore our faith in this type of holiday. The rooms were reasonable size for a change and the chalet was very comfortable overall.

Summary

I would go back to this resort although the flat centre and tows were a problem.

Uppers - Skiing area is vast and Chalet was good.

Downers - Bucket lifts or tow up to start involved a bit of a hike to main bubble.
